Podcast: The Holistic Approach to Mental Health

parkerPsychiatric medications are some of the most powerful medications on the market today.

Holistic Health Virtual Conference speaker Dr. Charles Parker, one of my favorite people in the world of health and wellness, is passionate about this belief that psychiatric interventions should include a more comprehensive overview of multiple systems that affect brain function.

Dr. Parker was kind enough to record a podcast with me that previews his session on “Holistic Mental Health: Mind-Body Biology.”

We talked about:

  • What’s wrong with the way most doctors approach mental health
  • The comprehensive, scientific approach that doctors should be taking with each patient
  • What else might be causing mental health challenges like AD/HD, depression, and anxiety

Insecticides Can Kill More Than Bugs: Here’s a Better Solution

othroWhen I lived in New York City, I had just one fear that consumed my home life: cockroaches.

I’m not the neatest person in the world; not even close. Sure, I could run the vacuum a little more than I do, but I never left food out, always cleaned up spills, and took great care to seal all the cracks and crevices where little critters could find their way in. But when you live in New York City, cockroaches are inevitable. They’re everywhere, and they will find you.

Of course, this was (and still is) an irrational fear. But there was something about the little creepy-crawlies that sent me into a panicked frenzy. It didn’t happen often, but when I did see one, I would grab a can of Ortho crawling insect killer and drown the little bugger. Then I’d have to open all the windows and turn on a fan because I just knew the fumes couldn’t be good.

In Holistic Health Virtual Conference speaker Dr. Daniel Amen’s latest newsletter, he shares recent research about a link between insecticide use and autoimmune damage. He recommends that you “keep commercial insecticides out of your home, and don’t let an exterminator use them either.”

After years off poisoning myself with insecticides, I found a better solution: essential oils. Through experimentation, I found that roaches (and most bugs) could be killed and/or kept away with essential oils of citronella, eucalyptus, or geranium. You can sprinkle a few drops in problem areas, or you can be just a little crazy (like I was) and put a few drops in a cup or container and trap the bug under it. Of course, if you use this option, you’ll also want to find a friend or family member willing to remove the cup and the bug after it dies!

Another option is to make your own natural bug spray. Here’s the Natural Bug Spray recipe we use:

  1. Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar or alcohol. Leave about 3 inches at the top.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  3. Add approximately 25 drops (or more if you like) of essential oils such as citronella, eucaplyptus, or geranium
  4. Shake well after making, and before each use.

This bug spray smells great, works just as well as the chemical stuff, and won’t wreak havoc on your body.

The Environmental Impact of Shopping

If you’re concerned about your personal impact on the environment, then you can probably guess that shopping online is safer for the environment than shopping in a physical store. But the impact of physical shopping vs online shopping may be greater than you think!

According to a recent study, “carbon emissions related to purchasing an item inside a store represents an increase of more than 15 times that of an online purchase.” You can read more about this study here.

(Side Note: If simply going to the mall to purchase an item has such a negative effect on the environment, then imagine the impact of attending a physical conference! Driving to the airport, taking a plane, and adding to the hotel laundry load are just a few of the things that can greatly increase your carbon footprint. Not to mention the other hundreds of people attending the conference along with you!

Here at Virtual Health Partners, we think that virtual conferences, like the Holistic Health Virtual Conference, are the way to go! Virtual conferences aren’t just environmentally friendly, they’re also easier on you!)

While it’s impossible to get everything you need online, it’s often more convenient, and sometimes even cheaper, to shop online.

Where do you do most of your shopping, in-person or online? What kinds of items to routinely purchase online?
